Lots to post

Well, at least Client Five’s Happy. I’ve now seen what they have to work with and they seem quite happy about the new look. However, they want me to make some small changes over the general look, so guess who’s in over the weekend. Things with Client Six are hectic. I was desperately trying to run the test scripts and overwrote someone else’s new work. (oops!).

Thankfully, I always backup before I modify things, so one quick restore later and we had a developer saying no harm done. (Whew!)

I’m now at work installing the client Five site over in America, unfortunately this means me sat in the office, remote connecting to the states and not going out there to visit. Shame really. I’m going stir Crazy. Still got Client One to reinitialise before I go home, but that shouldn’t present a problem.

There also seemed to be a lot of tension in our office. One of the developers has his overtime refused. They seem to change the criteria for overtime every few days and boy he was angry. I’m betting he’s putting his CV together and will be looking from next week. Don’t blame him, if it weren’t for the fact I’ve got no travel costs, then I’d be looking. It can be an incredible pressure cooker, and a lot of people are feeling it at the moment.

LSW and I have been looking at ways to do up the kitchen, New Work surfaces, New Cooker, new Tiles and new skirting board. We’re looking at £1300 for the whole lot. Hopefully that will leave another £700 to do the nursery with but I’m getting scared at the prices of baby things.

Submitted the fifth chapter of my Star Wars story, last night. I think the organiser of the site is loosing their enthusiasm for their project. There hasn’t been an update since the 20th. Think I’ll send them a tenner to help with the admin costs, it must be quite a site to run.

Have also spent a little time redesigning the map for the computer game. Think it looks a lot better and I’ve decided to rework the way the graphics are displayed, but there’s more of that on the project K blog.

Bugger that.

Not bothered to go back into work. The fixes in general should wait until the weekend anyway. Started reworking the game and to drink lots of tea instead.

I've got nothing left to give

B*stards, B*stards, B*stards. First of all Client Five want an update but the manager in charge refuses to see that the data they’ve given us doesn’t hold the information to show the full picture. Eventually had to get a copy of their schema and show him that it wasn’t physically possible. If I have to do that, then he should have done the job himself !!!!!!

Another Manager phones me up at Midday saying he needs a proposal for Client One by five. There’s nothing in the plan, just have to do it. This means I have to work for an extra hour just to catch up with Client Six. That project is now so far behind schedule we’re thinking on calling upon Doctor Who for some assistance!

Primal Scream therapy didn’t seem to work, (ie shove your face in a cushion, and scream into it for as long and as hard as you can, got the idea off Lilo and Stich) normally it works wonders, but I have to go back into the office at 10:30 to sort out another of Client One’s little screw ups.

LSW made pancakes to calm me down, she though I looked a little stressed.

Work wants what ?

My Soul ?!?

They want some major Changes to Client Five, Client Six has got to be finished tomorrow and Client One's big server failed two weeks ago and nobody told me. That means I've got to deal with this and work until 11:00 pm tonight! B*stards. I'm gonna to see about claiming that most sought after financial reward for this;

Overtime !

Chances of getting it ?

Bugger All !

Ooowww !

LSW started to say she can feel the baby move. No wind this time. I can hear gurgles that come from the stomach, but that's it. I'm thinking of Signing LSW up for Manchester United, because she kicked me awake four times last night. She says that everytime the baby kicks her, she's going to kick me. Why ? Because it will make me feel more of a part of the pregnancy.

Nervous.

Myself and LSW are off to the local hospital. Baby Scan.

Ego Boost.

Someone put on the Bioware website that they were reading my Fan Fiction and really enjoying it. Ah, welcome back ego, don't get too big.

Take cover.

I'm at work on a Sunday. LSW has decided that the Bedroom needs a new lick of paint, so I've decided to get out. Work needs a little refining on the Client Five front so I'll just get that out of the way and head back. She'll probably be very frustrated and guess who'll get it in the neck.

Why am I not helping her out? Well, it's her hobby. I get involved and she says I'm not doing it right, she gets even more flustered and then a big fight. It's very predictable. Admittedly, the shouting match we had last night was anything but. We'd decided to go out for a meal, but when she looked in the mirror, her confidence was shattered and we both went out in a bad mood. I'm not the most understanding of people, sometimes, but hand on heart I can say that this was brewing from the moment we stepped out of the house.

Anyway, we were in a crowded bar waiting for our table and it all kicked off. Anything I said was met with snappish replies and that got my hackles up. Ten minutes later of this kind of conversation, I was wondering about going home and then we really got stuck into each other. There then followed another ten minutes of awkward silence, followed by a mumbled apology from each of us. Talk about practice for kids.

She did say that she felt better after letting off steam like that but ouch. And also she began to see that there were girls out on the town, who were not pregnant, but a lot larger round the stomach and practically wearing nothing but a g-string. Funny really, it seems to me that women are a very competitive bunch, always comparing each other in the most nasty way possible. Some are vocal about it, some keep it to themselves, or come up with a more tactful way of putting it, but they all seem to do it.

The Star Wars ff is half done, but I put a link up to the new chapters up on the message board. That’s only supposed to be done by the site owner. Think they might get a bit peeved at me. Hope they’ll let me finish it.

But the game, oh it’s so depressing. The graphics are still not displaying and I’ve just found out that a company in Denmark have a game with a similar concept. Only theirs is done. BUGGER! Can’t stop though. I think this is something to prove to myself, might even work out better than I thought. I’ll observe them and see if I can learn from any mistakes they make.

Stop Laughing

LSW made an announcement last night.

"I can feel it moving." she said.

She then proceeded to let out the longest and louded fart I have ever heard.

"Oh no! Just trapped wind!"

I got hit by a cushion for laughing for too long and too loud.

"You sound disappointed" I said, when I stopped laughing, "deflated even."

Thwacked by another cushion.

We've booked a trip to London for my Birthday and we're off Monday morning for a scan so things are quite pleasent on the home front, for the moment.

Succsess (Sort Of)

I've started to get Client Five's Data too look nice. Hopefully we'll have something sorted by tomorrow. Client V is kicking up a stink. Most poeple are having to work over the weekend to keep the sweet. Luckly I'm not one of them.

Nasty Bank away.

Sorted out the bank loan and sent off the transfer form. Just a direct debit and clearing out any remaining assets to sort out now. It feels so much better. !

Now what ?

It seems we have a letter from egypt, addressed to LSW. It's probably just marketing junk from the hotel but still bit strange. Finished writing chapter four of the Fan Fict last night, but the site in America has been updated for more than a week now. I've popped off an email to see what's wrong but there'a been no reply. I'm going to look into setting up my own website for the rest of it tonight.

Client Five's Data is hard to translate. All the Assumptions we made have had to be thrown out. I've got to make a desision to either re-import the data into our schema or continue with our view translation idea. It's a head scratcher and I've only got a few hours to prove it out to myself.

I finally sold my nasty bank shares. Sending off the share certificate today. 1 down, 3 things left before I can fire them.

Strange Start to the week.

What a strange weekend. LSW received her card and a present. I decided that I’ve had enough of all the pretend romance, so she got Pulp Fiction on DVD. Still we had a romantic night in because we couldn’t get in at any Restaurant in Manchester. So I cooked a meal and we settled down to watch a mushy film. Think we preferred that to all the rushing around and bad service you get if you went out for a meal.

Cracked the problem with the game. I’ve been held up with a double whammie of a bug for the last two Months. It was just so stupid when I spotted the problem, maybe I should give up this programming lark and flip burgers over at McMurder Burger.

I’m now behind on two projects, Client Six is taking longer than expected. Mostly because the project people haven’t taken into account how complicated what they want is. Glient Four, hell I dunno where to start. I’m going to sit down and plant out what’s to be done. However, in order to make up for my cock up with Client Two, I’ve got a new App planned, I’ll work on it in my spare time and show it to management on Thursday afternoon. Hopefully, they’ll accept it as an apology.

Holy Flying F*ck

Well, that was a day I'd rather forget. Apparently Client Two ran part of our system last night and one report fell over with a really obvious and stupid error. Apparently in front of one of their bigwigs. I got bollocked. Our project manager, was well within his rights to haul my arse over the coals, but he didn't. I've got two theorys on this;

1. he thinks that a quiet word will be more effective.
2. He don't care becaue I'm going to get fired.

Not good, because I'm thinking the latter.

We finaly got data from Client Five, Not 700 MB, more like 8 GB. I've left the database restoring overnight because I'm not going to pull an all nighter watching a blue bar crawl accross a screen.

Six's problems are a lot more complicated than I thought, I might have to stay home on the weekend and sort them out. On Sunday Of course, because tomorrow is St Clinton-Birthdays-Halmark days, who on the 15th will be selling easter cards.

Never had a chance to cal the bank during the day with so much kicking off and a lot of the male population of Manchester will be in trouble tomorrow. The City and United Cup tie on Valentines day ? I can hear the divorce lawyers rubbing their hands with glee from here.

Strange Days

Well Client Five has now run my script, and they say it’s created a 700 MB database ready for us to muck about with. Now I’ve got to wait a few more days for the CD to arrive. Guys we needed this last week! Oh Well.

Client Two’s machines can’t handle a space before a \. It’s only taken a week to track that one down and fix it and starting to work on Client Six’s projects. Initial looked very simple, but the more you go into it, the more it becomes an Onion project.

An Onion project is a nightmare to develop. Once you’ve done one layer of work, you find there’s another layer of work underneath. That’s when you start crying.

I’ve found out that it’s the graphics in the game that are the problem. I’ve got to find out what I need to do in order get the display working again. I might be able to have a read crack at it over the weekend.

LSW has spent most of the week asleep, she’s very tired. Got to get something for Saturday, but I’m not sure what to do. She doesn’t want to go out because she feels fat. What ever happened to the pregnant women who glow! I’ve got to get a valentines card. It should be renamed ST Hallmark Day. It forces some people to a monetary value on love.

For example, one of the teenagers on our road was complaining VERY LOUDLY IN THE STREET SO EVERYBODY COULD HEAR that her boyfriend did not spend more on her than her best mates boyfriend did. Her boyfriend then told her to stuff it and stomped off. Who ever said romance was dead.

Hopefully tomorrow I’ll be able to start proceeding to get rid of the nasty bank in the next few days.

Still Nowt from G.

I've been told to put client Five on hold, they seem to be messing us about too much. Onto Client Six. However, I have my copy of KOTOR back and so I'm off to play that tonight. Nobody at work can tell me what's wrong with my JAVA code. It's a mystery.

Dads 'R Us...

The Dads ‘R Us Club (a group of ten or so other developers at work, all of whom have very young children) has been discussing the BIRTH! It was a typical lad conversation about the uses for afterbirth, procedures and what can go wrong. Lot of them are obviously urban myths, (i.e. this happened to my great aunt’s cousin’s wife! Or a mate!) And they’re trying to make me feel queasy. They’ve succeeded, not feeling to well, think I’ll never be able to look at beef pate again

Still nothing from Client Five, so that’s another couple of points for them. At least, Client Four seems to be coming round but we haven’t heard a thing about by Client Two.

I put my saving cheque in the Nasty Bank so that I can clear off their loan and then I can close the account with them. The woman behind the counter asked if I had plans for this money, which is a typical marketing attempt to try and get them more business. I had to bite my lip, remembering that the poor lady was only doing her job and did deserve me going off on one.

Monday, February 09, 2004

Right. That's it.

I've got to take my Java Program into work and ask some of the real Java heads, how they do it. I'm getting nowhere with this.

Right Client Five gets 10 Points !!!

They were supposed to run the script on Sunday. Bloody 'Mercans, They could have even set it up an run it as a job. Nobody needed to sit and watch it !!! They couldn't get the overtime for someone to press a key on a computer and then read a paper for an hour. Now I won't get anything until Wednesday. I now have a Scottish European Cup's chance of getting the work done in time. B*st*rds.

Game still not displaying anything. Thinking about charging head long into a brick wall. The bank, however has unfrozen my account. They said there was an Error. Another 5 points on the WSI for them, but then could they please talk to me about this loan I have with them? They want to extend it ?

Got Kicked all right.

But not for the reason I thought. The Burglar Alarm fired off at about 3:30 am, scaring the wits out of LSW, who promptly gave me a quick kick. So after much running around, I checked the Alarm and then checked the cameras for outside. It fired on Zone 2, which means something happened in the Living Room. Checked the windows and doors. Nothing! Even went outside to look to see if there were any footprints in the flowerbeds. Nothing.

Reassured LSW and went back to sleep. Had a nightmare that I was the next Tony Martain.

Not my night.

Gave up on the game, tonight so I thought I'd give old Jedi Academy Multiplayer a go. Got myself chopped up with too many people ganging up on the newbie. Not going to be my night. I'd go to bed but LSW would probably kick me awake for snoring as soon as I'd fall asleep.

Drat, Drat and double drat.

Client Two's latest build has a huge bug in it. There is missing functionality in it. It's a showstopper, nobody told me about it but guess who's got to fix it! Well thanks a bunch guys, one point on the WDI for you lot. Still don't know what's happening with the other machines in the States but that's going to be another problem.

The Damn Game still won't work. I can't get it to read a PNG and display it in a frame. I'm supposed to be able to code this sh*t with my eyes closed, but for some reason it refuses to play ball.

LSW has decided that our bedroom needs redecorating again. This will be the third time this year. We've been shopping for bed covers and curtains. I seem to be at a disadvantage, as a heterosexual male, because I can't tell the difference between the colours 'Oyster' and 'Plain Cream'. Do women have eyes that are more sensitive to colour? Even went shopping with her for maternity wear on Saturday. Help, I want to start supporting a football team. Can't stand football, but it will be an excuse to get out of the shopping.

Finished the second chapter of my short story, only six chapter's left.

Oh Dear, a Client's in trouble.

Well, It seems that Satan has decided to unleash the biggest turd of misfortune on me today and Monday is going to be worse. I finally plucked up the courage to phone the Nasty Bank to find out my account has been suspended. We asked why, I was told that I would have to discuss this with a bank manager on Monday. This has got me confused and a little angry.

Work has also decided to unload a whole load of devil poo upon me. Client Five will give me the data I need hopefully on Monday, but that only leaves me with a week to get everything ready for a presentation, and that is quite tight. Client Four has decided that we are not pulling our weight and is probably in discussion with some competitors about replacing us. Somebody in our firm promised too much to them and now we're paying the price. My part of their system is fine and they have told us they are happy with it. However, as any SA will tell you, a system is only good if it completely works and at the moment, ours don't.

On a more positive note, the first chapter of my star wars fiction went on the net today. Even got a very nice comment from somebody in America about it. LSW says that she's feeling better; apparently it's not only trapped wind, but also stuff in her body moving out of the way so the baby can grow. Makes me feel ill just thinking about it. Move over Liver, watch out Kidneys, Baby coming through!!

Still haven't worked on the game today though, I need to look at the graphics more closely. You just reckon that if you can get over this first step, then things will get better. Hopefully I'll have a serious crack at it over the weekend.

Another Client to add to the List.

Welcome Client Six to the wonderful world of the F*ck-up. Client Four is in a major panic and our systems do not seem to be working as well as they should. The part of the system I'm responsible for is working just fine, however that's no good if the rest of it's ballsing up left right and center.

However, my home machine has been virused and I don't know How the damn things got on here ! Thank god for Norton, but it's got me paranoid about my firewalls. Might even have to buy one instead of relying on the Microsoft One.

Wednesday, February 04, 2004

WTF !!

Who opened the Poo Gates !! I'm drowing in requests. I mean it's nice to be wanted but hell. LSW is still ill and I'm getting a little worried, the thing is I can't show it otherwise she'll get worse. The two of us can be a vicious circle of panic.

Client Two's Machine completely refuse to run the scripts that run ok on every other machine on the planet.

I still haven't phoned the Nasty Bank yet, I even got all the documentation to talk to them. I know it's only a phone call away but I'm having cold sweats.

Monsoon Season.

We are having a torrent of rain at the moment. The Car had to swim to work.

Our Installation team in the states have had a problem with Client Two. Some new modules were written while I was away on Holiday and, Boom, they're not working. Probably an Installation problem, but will have to investigate anyway.

Client One on the other hand is very pleased. A system I wrote for them is working flawlessly (After a lot of the usual initial setup problems). Even got an 'ATABOY' from one of the Bosses. Client Five is still running the script.

LSW is suffering from stomach pains and trapped wind. This means that she's a little grumpy and restless, so I didn't have much in the way of sleep last night. She looked in agony, but must make a note to self never to suggest for her to take time off, or take it easy. I don't want to go looking for my head once it's been bitten off. If she's this snappish then the pain must be bad.

I'm still having real problems with the game I'm writing (see other Blog), I'm getting a little down about the whole thing. It's only graphics, but it's so frustrating.

Still Waiting.......

Client Five has just gained 1 point on the WSI for two reasons;-

1. They first say my script is wrong....
2. They suddenly release the script is right but it's going to a couple of days to run ....

They've had this script for four days and done nothing. AAAARRRGGHHHH !!

I did however bottle out of calling the nasty bank. I'll have to pluck up the courage tomorrow.

I will never understand women. Even Hormonally Pregnant Women. LSW took ten minutes to stop laughing. I'm relieved but still have to work, cleaning up a load of mess I miss. I have now vowed never to buy or even eat one of those pies again.

A couple of weeks ago, I sent the first chapter of a little Star Wars Short Story to a web site for publishing. Normally, it only takes a couple of days for a chapter to appear, but it appears that the site owner is ill and nothing's been published for a week and a bit. I'm wondering if I should offer my help to clear the backlog, just in a shallow effort to get my little story online.

More Sci Fi stuff here, They've gone and renewed Battlestar Galactica on the sci Fi Channel. The whole thing has caused a real net war, as the old fans complain unendingly at the new show. It's because the old actors arn't in it and there are tons of changes done to the plot. Will wait and see what it's like when I get the chance.

Got more Banking to do today, this time with the nasty lot. So far in the last year, they've charded me over £ 200 in charges because the keep on messing about with the overdraft limit I've got. The sooner I pay off their Loan and close my account the better.

Still no Data from Client Five, I'm going to have to add points on the WSI for them, been waiting now two weeks and getting well peeved at them.

Good News :- The Bank were quick, reasonable and efficent.
Bad News :- I dropped my lunch into the recently washed clothes basket.

I now no longer want to go home. I'll be in casualty tomorrow.

I've just realised that I'm going to have to deal with the banks over the phone this lunchtime. I'm bricking it because I hate them so much. As long as I can talk to someone in this country and not someone in India I should be fine, but I still find it nerve wracking...

Ah! The start of a new Blog.

I should point out that we (our company, The Big Smell) works for several clients, in the interest of not getting any legal actions against me, I'll just name them clients One, Two, Three and Four.

My wife I'll have to refer to as the LSW (Long Suffering Wife). We've been together for almost ten years and if that's not long suffering, then I don't know what is. She's Five Months pregnant, works full time and is very 'Monica' about the cleanliness of our house.

Personally, I'm a Net Head (can't you tell) with a Star Wars Fixiation. On top of that I like writing just to basically keep me sane. Personally, this blog it's just to throw my callous, selfish personality into sharp relief by venting inane drivel.

I occasionally write reviews for the BBCi's Collective and I'm desperately trying to write a computer game. (See the Project K Blog. http://projectk.blogspot.com/)

At work I've start a W*nker Stock Index, that's people in my life who really pee me off. (a minus score is good and a positive score is bad), an idea that I've nicked from someone else, but it works for me... I've started with the following scores.

Myself : 0
LSW : - 20
Project Leader at Work : 0 (PLW)
Testing Leader at work : 0 (TLW)
Tester One : 0 (T)
Nice Bank : 0
Nasty Bank : 15 (My old work).
Client One : 0
Client Two : 0
Client Three : 0
Client Four : 0
